A thank you to Bernd Schneider (Industry Manager Energy – Balluff GmbH Germany) for this weeks blog post on sensors for arctic conditions.
The climatic conditions in the arctic are characterized by cold winters and short summers. There is a large variability in climate and weather: Some regions face permafrost and are ice covered year-round with temperatures down to -40°C / -40°F (and lower), other land areas face the extremes of solar radiation up to +30°C / +86°F in summer.

We often get asked: “What does NPFA mean with respect to cylinders?” (Hint: The National Fire Protection Association is not endorsing cylinders)
NFPA Cylinders have common features that are designed based on standards created by the National Fluid Power Association (www.NFPA.com). This allows the flexibility for end users to interchange cylinders between one manufacturer and another. Common features include port sizes and locations, mounting styles and mounting dimensions. These linear actuators are available in both hydraulic and pneumatic versions. Construction consist of square end caps and typically four tie rods. The cylinders are available in aluminum, steel and stainless steel. NFPA standards allow greater flexibility to find a cylinder that fits your application.

Mill-Type cylinders are cylinders designed to fill a need for a more durable, more reliable product to reduce down-time and maintenance costs. Based on design specifications that are not subject to NFPA limitations, the mill-type cylinder has heavy-duty construction with steel flanged end caps, heavy-wall steel tubing, bigger pistons, bearings, advanced gland design, and numerous other features. The mill-type cylinder also has a high pressure rating which is well above industry standards. Together these features assure greater reliability under the severest environmental and operational conditions.

Industrial valves are flow control devices that are used in pipelines and process plants. The valve’s job is somewhat like that of a tap where the flow of the pipeline is controlled by opening or closing the valve. Valve Automation is the process of adding a valve actuator and control system to the valve. Actuators could be powered by human, electric, pneumatic or hydraulic energy.

Spring-return actuators are a great mechanical solution to fail-close or fail-open process valve requirements. Over the years, we’ve made some as large as 24 feet long. However, just because we can do it doesn’t always mean it’s practical; sometimes there are weight or space constraints.
